North West University condemns false voice note on religious freedom

The North-West University (NWU) has strongly rejected a resurfaced voice note allegedly made by a student. The note falsely claims that students are not allowed to practice their Christian beliefs on the Potchefstroom Campus.

The university confirmed that the voice note was originally circulated in February 2023. It has once again been distributed across social media platforms. This has sparked renewed concern within the student community.

In the recording, a person identified as “Mira” suggests that Christian students are prohibited from practicing their faith on campus. The university has dismissed this claim as baseless.

In an official statement released on 11 August 2025, NWU described the allegations as “ridiculous, laughable, and deeply disturbing.” They warned that such actions are designed to create division and mistrust within the community.

“Actions like these are aimed at causing disharmony and polarisation among the NWU community and must be condemned and punished harshly whenever perpetrators are found,” the university said.

NWU further stressed its commitment to upholding the Constitutional Rights of all students and staff. They affirmed that freedom of religion and belief is protected on all its campuses.

“No infringement of the Constitutional Rights of any individual will ever be allowed at the NWU. We again distance ourselves from the content of the voice note and urge our stakeholders to ignore such mischievous actions.”  University said in a statement posted on its website.

The university highlighted the dangers of misinformation. This is especially true in sensitive matters like religion. These issues can quickly lead to unnecessary tension. By resurfacing old false claims, those spreading the message risk damaging the spirit of unity and inclusivity that NWU says it strives to maintain.

NWU has assured its community that any individual found to be deliberately spreading false information will face serious consequences.

The university has urged its stakeholders to stay vigilant. They should ignore false information. Stakeholders are also encouraged to support efforts to strengthen unity within the NWU community.

Freedom of religion remains fully protected at NWU, as the statement makes clear. Any attempts to suggest otherwise will not be tolerated.
