DUT releases the name of student who died tragically on campus

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has officially released the identity of the student. He tragically lost his life on Tuesday, 19 August 2025, at the Steve Biko campus.

The student has been identified as Mr SphiwoKuhle Madela, a third-year Diagnostic Radiography student in the Faculty of Health Sciences. In a statement, DUT described him as a ‘dedicated and hardworking’ student who was excelling in his studies.

According to the university, Mr Madela received full funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). This funding covered both tuition and residence in 2025.

DUT further clarified that he was not part of the exceptions list. This list is commonly referred to as defunded students. This clarification put to rest speculation that the tragedy was linked to financial exclusion.

Instead, the university emphasised that the incident was due to personal distress and not related to academic or funding issues.

we wish to emphasise that this tragedy was not related to funding or academic matters but rather to personal matters”

The university further extended the message of support to family and friends of the diseased.

“It has been a sad and traumatic time for the DUT community. We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Madela’s family, friends, classmates, and the Faculty of Health Sciences during this extremely difficult time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all who knew and loved Mr SphiwoKuhle Madela. May his soul rest in peace.” the university said.

The institution also expressed concern over the circulation of images and videos of the incident on social media. They urged the public to show respect and compassion towards the grieving family and friends. The public should refrain from sharing such content.

To support the DUT community, Student Services has made counselling available for affected students and staff.

Those in need of assistance have been encouraged to reach out to the university’s counselling services or Employee Wellness support.

The university has stated they will honour Mr. Madela by suspending all remaining classes for 20 August 2025. This will allow its community to mourn. Furthermore, the university will host a memorial service. The time will be disclosed after consulting the family of Mr. Madela.

University has urged everyone to remain respectful and consider family and friends of the diseased.

“As we grieve, it is important that we remain respectful and considerate of the family   and friends who are in mourning” DUT added.
