Harding, 19 August 2025 – The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has expressed deep sorrow. This follows the death of one of its students in a tragic incident today. The incident occurred in Durban. The incident first appeared on social media. It was about a student who committed suicide by jumping off the Steve Biko Campus building.
The university posted an official statement on social media. It expressed being “shocked” by the passing of the young man. The university is also “deeply saddened” by his death.
“We convey our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of the young man who has sadly passed away. Police are currently investigating the incident, and the name of the student will be released once the next of kin have been formally informed,” the statement read.
DUT confirmed that counselling services are available. These services are for both students and staff. They will help them cope during this difficult time.
The institution urged the university community to support one another and to seek professional support where needed.
“We pray for strength and comfort for all who are mourning. May the soul of our dearly departed rest in eternal peace,” the university added.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an investigation into the incident. Details surrounding the circumstances of the student’s death have not yet been disclosed.
Authorities have indicated that further information will be made available once the student’s family has been formally notified.
The university has encouraged students and staff affected by the tragedy to reach out to the DUT Student Counselling Centre. They should also contact employee support services for assistance.
“The university has made counselling support available to both students and staff during this difficult time” university alluded.
As statement emphasised, the DUT community continues to mourn the loss of one of its own.
